Mr. Ray was born in Pittsburg, CA, and raised in Corning, CA. He is a 1984 graduate of Corning High School, where he was an all-WSL performer in football and baseball. He received his B.S. in mathematics from CSU Chico in 1988 and his M.S. in education from National University in 2007.

He started his career in education in 1989, at Corning High School, where he taught physical science and general math. In 1991, he joined the teaching staff at West Valley High School. During his teaching career, he has been involved in a number of activities outside of the classroom. He has coached football, basketball, and baseball. Coach Ray was the varsity baseball coach for six years.  During this time his teams won four NAL Championships and were NSCIF Division 1 Runner-up twice.  Mr. Ray has also spent three years as activities director and seven years as the mathematics department chairman. In 2002, Mr. Ray became assistant principal in charge of discipline, attendance and athletics. In 2006, he made a lateral move to become assistant principal in charge of curriculum, activities and counseling.  In 2010, Mr. Ray became the principal of North Cottonwood School.

Don is married to Melissa, who is also in education as a high school teacher. They have two sons, Derek and Darren. Outside of school, Don enjoys coaching his son's youth sports teams and spending time with his family and friends.
